Is AeroPress Filter Coffee?

July 04, 2025

The AeroPress allows you to brew high-quality coffee from the comfort of your own home. There is a wide range of AeroPress brewing equipment available for you to choose from, including the AeroPress and AeroPress Go.

This brewing method is popular thanks to its efficiency and portability. But is AeroPress classed as filter coffee? Read our article to find out!

What is Filter Coffee?

Filter coffee is made when hot water is poured over the coffee grounds and allowed to drip through a filter, which separates the liquid from the grounds. Some examples of filtered coffee include:

  • Chemex
  • Hario V60
  • Drip coffee machines

But an AeroPress uses a filter to brew coffee, so that makes it a filter coffee, right? That is correct!

The AeroPress is classed as a type of filter coffee because it uses a paper or metal filter to separate the coffee grounds from the liquid to create the perfect, sediment-free cup of coffee!

How do Other Brewing Methods Compare to Filter Coffee?

Other types of brewing methods differ compared to filter coffee in different ways, such as:

  • Their extraction process
  • Flavour profiles
  • Resulting body

An AeroPress is an immersion brewing method, which involves coffee grounds being fully submerged in hot water for a set time.

However, the V60, 3-cup and 6-cup Chemex are percolation methods, which means water flows through the coffee grounds via gravity.

Here are some of the differences between filter coffee and other types of brewing methods:

Brewing Method How Does it Compare to Filter Coffee?
French Press Produces a more full-bodied cup.
AeroPress Produces a more full-bodied cup.
Espresso Produces a much stronger and more concentrated cup.
Cold Brew Much less acidic compared to filter coffee.

Filter coffee makes a lighter-bodied cup of coffee compared to other brewing methods and tends to have a more delicate flavour.

How Does an AeroPress Work?

The AeroPress takes around 2–3 minutes to brew and is quick and easy to clean. If you own an AeroPress or you’re looking to purchase one but are unsure as to how they work, you’re in the right place.

The AeroPress was invented in 2005 by Alan Adler. The AeroPress works by combining immersion brewing with gentle pressure to create high-quality cups of coffee.

How to Brew Coffee Using an AeroPress

Now you know how the AeroPress works, how can you brew your coffee using this brewing method? It’s simple! Here is a step-by-step guide for you to follow:

  • Grind: Medium Fine
  • Dose: 16g (3 tbsp)
  • Final Cup: 200ml
  1. Boil your kettle. Ideally, to 94°C, but if you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, just let it boil, then sit for a few minutes. This temperature allows for better extraction.
  2. Place an inverted AeroPress on your scales and tare them.
  3. Grind your coffee and decant 16g into the chamber.
  4. Tare your scales.
  5. Pour 50ml of boiled water into the chamber, saturating the coffee.
  6. Turn on the timer.
  7. Stir the coffee anti-clockwise 5 times, then clockwise 5 times.
  8. Leave until the timer reads 1 minute.
  9. Pour 150ml of boiled water into the chamber.
  10. Stir the coffee anti-clockwise 5 times, then clockwise 5 times.
  11. Put 2 AeroPress filter papers into the cap and wet them, removing the papery taste and ensuring the papers stick to the cap.
  12. Place the cap on the chamber.
  13. Place the cup of your choice on the chamber, and whilst holding both the cup and the AeroPress, carefully flip them over.
  14. At around 2 mins 20, press the plunger steadily through to the hiss.
  15. Remove the AeroPress and stir the coffee.
  16. Serve when the timer reads 5 minutes and enjoy your brew!
