The V60 and Chemex are both types of filter coffee that allow you to brew cafe-quality coffee from the comfort of your own home. Although they have similarities when it comes to brewing coffee, some differences set them apart.
Throughout this guide, we will explore whether or not you can use V60 filters in a Chemex and why. Read our article to find out more!
The V60 is a popular pour-over brewing method designed in 2004 and released in 2005 by the Japanese company Hario. The name ‘V60’ comes from the shape of the model. The ‘V’ refers to the cone-shaped design, and ‘60’ represents the 60-degree angle of its sides.
Inside the V60 are interior ridges, which are designed to help with the air flow during the brewing process.
When using the V60, the recommended coffee-water ratio is 6–8g of coffee per 100g of water.
The Chemex is also a manual pour-over coffeemaker, which is well-known for its hourglass design and thick paper filters. This brewing method was invented in 1941 by Peter Schlumbohm and is currently featured in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
The Chemex allows you to brew high-quality cups of coffee at home without any bits of sediment or oils making their way into the coffee.
When people hear the term ‘filters’, they automatically think of paper filters, I know I do! So, doesn’t that mean the filters for a V60 and Chemex are the same? Well, not necessarily no.
That being said, what is the difference between V60 and Chemex filters? The main differences between these two filters are the type of paper they use, shape, thickness and material.
For example, the filters used for a V60 are paper filters, whereas the paper used for a Chemex is thicker filter paper, also known as bonded paper.
V60 | Chemex | |
---|---|---|
Shape | These filters are cone-shaped and made to fit into the 60-degree angle of the dripper. | These filters are cone-shaped and specifically designed to fit into the Chemex carafe. |
Thickness | Thinner than a Chemex filter | Thicker than a V60 filter |
Material | Made from thin FSC-certified paper | Made from bonded paper (20–30% thicker than other brands) |
The filters used for a Chemex vary depending on the model. For example, the filters used for a 6-cup Chemex are larger compared to the 3-cup model. This is because the two models are different sizes.
Well, it’s definitely not illegal, that’s for sure, but we wouldn’t recommend it. Although you can use the V60 filters in a Chemex, they’re not designed for this model.
So to answer your question, yes, you can use V60 filters in a Chemex, but it may come with some potential issues, such as:
As briefly mentioned before, you can use a V60 filter in your Chemex; however, doing this may compromise the quality of your brew. We would recommend you purchase V60 filters if you’re purchasing a V60 and Chemex filters if you buy a Chemex.
